AGROFORESTRY / TREE PLANTING
Under agroforestry program, the Lwengo district farmers were introduced to a campaign of planting the Mutuba trees scientifically called the “Ficus Natalensis” & specially the Ntakire as from this type of species, good quality barkcloth is obtained.
The barkcloth centre project distributed over 300 Mutuba tree seedlings to Lwengo district & farmers were trained on how to plant, harvest & intercrop the Mutuba tree. This has empowered & helped the farmers to upgrade on their farming skills which will at the end yield them good results regarding barkcloth production & commercial farming as well.
BARKCLOTH PRODUCTION TRAINING
The barkcloth centre project established four workshops in Lwengo district that aimed at training the youths how to plant, harvest, maintenance and barkcloth production in all stages which includes trimming, boiling the bark, beating the bark, shaping the holes, stitching and sun drying. The training lasted 3 months and was crowned with a barkcloth competition amongst the four workshops alongside their certificates of completion.
The barkcloth centre has impacted the Masaka youths by investing into their 3 months training session so that they can attain the knowledge and skills about the barkcloth production and also the project has been a source of income to the trainers as they earned for all the 3 months they trained. And this has added on their curriculum vitaes as an extra and leaving them at a stage whereby they can start their own workshops. During the same training period, both the farmers & the youths were connected to BOTFA group to help them improve on the quality of the barkcloth and how best they can engage into international market affairs.
